Ultrasonic special bath for gentle removal of biofilms
The success of treatment for implant infections depends on a precise microbiological diagnosis. Because microorganisms form biofilms on foreign bodies, they are often difficult to detect in the surrounding tissue. As a result, treatment is only possible to a limited extent. With the BactoSonic ultrasonic special bath, biofilms can be gently removed from the surface of an infected implant. Compared with other ultrasonic baths, the device operates with low-frequency ultrasound at low intensity. This means that the detached microorganisms are not destroyed but remain available for the subsequent microbiological analysis. In accordance with the scientifically established procedure, the implant is placed in a box included in the delivery, covered with liquid and sonicated in the BactoSonic ultrasonic special bath. The resulting liquid is processed microbiologically and the quantity of bacteria is stated quantitatively. Up to 10.000 times more bacteria can be detected than with conventional methods, such as from biopsies of periprosthetic tissue. Mixed infections and different bacterial morphotypes can be detected more effectively. Sensitivity is improved particularly in patients who have previously received antibiotic therapy.
